Rooftop Farming and Urban Sustainability

In the repercussion of urbanization and its ever-growing feature, we have lost plenty of agricultural land for the purpose of constructing buildings to accommodate the growing population. This means we would be having less land to grow food and will turn out to be an alarming challenge for future generations. To tackle this situation, a viable option is to start rooftop farming.

The notion of urban sustainability and growing food by people themselves has been adopted by the international communities across the globe. This is done so as to eradicate situations when people have to depend on external sources for food.

Rooftop farming has got its own benefits. It gives better temperature control and also hydrological benefits to the buildings in which it is done. Such systems can be installed in residential and commercial buildings and some of the well-known methods include hydroponics, container gardening and aeroponics.

It also helps in reducing the negative impact of development on environment, society and economy as well. By installing green roof systems, it retains 60 to 100 percentage of stormwater and is believed to have longer life-span than regular roofs. Ensure that while setting up rooftop farming system, you have enough space between plants and also that you provide adequate layer of soil for growing plants. Irrigation setup and drainage system on the roof should be inspected at regular intervals.
