Construction of green buildings and what happens behind it

Green buildings are being constructed with nature and protecting it kept in mind. The main objective of constructing it is to reduce the consumption of water, make it energy efficient, conserve natural resources and to generate less waste while building a healthy space for the occupants to call it as a home. This not only benefits the nature but also helps the residents to save costs and be a part of the initiative to protect our planet.

Here is a list of what goes into the various phases of construction of green buildings:

Design stage

Here, the focus is to develop a blueprint that encourages its residents for green living. Thus, the builder must be careful and choose resource-efficient materials as a part of its fixtures, fittings, structure and complete infrastructure. Construction that helps in optimum usage of daylight, achieved through design, usage of glass, orientation, etc. must be planned.

Construction stage

Use of resource-efficient equipment and procedure must be followed and reduce construction waste by reusing it. In addition to bricks, fly ash can be used which reduces the dependency on cement, linked to emission of carbon dioxide. It also enhances thermal efficiency keeping interiors fresh in summer and warm during winter.

Occupancy or maintenance stage

Develop sewage treatment and water treatment plants, robust waste management system, rainwater harvesting system, use of renewable energy like solar PV, solar water heating and solar street light, energy efficient lighting system and equipments, use of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paints, adhesives and insulations, heat reducing reflective paints on terrace roof sections, etc.
